It’s hard not to look at the onslaught of festival street style images on your Instagram/Pinterest feeds without cringing at the pseudo-gypsies and wannabe hippies. There’s a fair smattering of outlandish looks and eccentric getups, to varying degrees of sartorial conviction.
Yet despite the overall costumey feel of the whole charade, I can’t help but remember digging through my dress-up chest, flinging layers of tulle behind me, sorting through piles of sequins, beads and endless fabric, and look back at the bliss of strutting about in the fantastically elaborate ensembles I had crafted. Crossing back over into real life, I love to maintain an element of imagination in an everyday outfit. There’s just something a bit alluring about the bravado of it all—the eclectic pilings of jewelry, the hypnotic prints, and the glittering accents. But if you’re not a fearless Coachella queen, here’s how to translate that free-spirited flavor of festival fashion into your everyday duds.
Fringe
Fringe immediately invokes a classic hippie vibe. A luxe fringed bag is the perfect way to incorporate the trend to everyday without looking like you’re headed to a Halloween party.
Forever 21 purse, $44.90
Eclectic Jewelry
Boho baubles instantly transform a simple black crop top into a bold backdrop. I adore anything trimmed with turquoise or dancing with dangly coins.
Natalie B. necklace, $88
White Lace
There are few things I love wearing more than graceful lace. It’s timeless and darling in the summer months. A sweeping maxi dress can pose the risk of looking more bridal than boho, but a shorter hemline is breezy and effortless.
Free People dress, $168
Embellished Jacket
Colorful embroidered embellishments, endless beads and fluttering tassels, encapsulate the eclectic essence of the festival scene. A basic jacket transformed with all the trimmings is the perfect ode to festival fearlessness.
Free People jacket, $198
Crochet
Perfect for cooler evenings or breezy days by the beach, I love crocheted details in solid black or in colorful sunburst patterns. The delicate detailing is beautifully layered over a simple black slip or shaper bodysuit.
Forever 21 dress, $24.90
Airy Maxi Dress
Drapey dresses and billowy sleeves look perfect in crisp summer whites. Minimal accessories accent this simply chic style.
Free People dress, $198
Loose Patterned Dresses
Balance intricate patterns with a light flowy shape. Butterfly sleeves and relaxed necklines make the look effortlessly edgy.
Tolani dress, $173
