5 Ways to Make the Best of Your Summer

Twenty-Something Tuesday

As May comes to an end, we officially begin looking ahead to those warm summer months and their associated joys: outdoor adventures, fresh seasonal produce, and maybe playing hooky every once in a while. If you’re looking for a goal this summer beyond “maybe go to the beach one time?” then consider this list your guide.

1.) Maximize Beach Time

Spend all the time humanly (and I guess, according to your work schedule) possible at the beach. No one ever looks back at their summer and says “Man I wish I hadn’t wasted all that time laying out at the beach. Should’ve spent more time going over my investment portfolio!” (OK, maybe someone supervillain from “The OC” has said that, but they sound terrible.) Also, the beach is a plug-in free, and a great place to demolish book after book. Beach 4 life, girls. – Kati

2.) Take Care of Your Toes

Like many people, I spend winter stomping around in wool socks and boots. When the weather gets warm enough to slip on sandals, it’s time to tell chipped polish and wacky cuticles to kindly f*ck off. I use a pumice stone to get rid of any dead skin, followed by some intensely moisturizing lotion and fuzzy socks. As for your nails, splurge on a pedicure, or treat yourself to some new nail polish and spend a peaceful hour with Netflix while you get your feet ready to be reintroduced to society. Or don’t paint your nails at all, if that’s your jam! Healthy, cared-for feet make for a happy summer. – Michelle

3.) Prioritize You Skincare

Protect your skin! This should be a no-brainer, but don’t go outside for more than 10-15 minutes without sunscreen (even if you aren’t one of the palest people on the planet). All skin tones can burn, and it only takes a few minutes during the hottest part of the day. Don’t forget sunscreen for your face! If you have light hair, also wear a hat; your scalp will thank you for it later. Nobody wants to come home after a nice day at the beach or picnic in the park looking like a lobster because they forgot to protect their skin. – Allie

4.) Capitalize on Local Produce

Visit your local farmers market! Farmer’s markets are a great way to support local farmers and try interesting new fruits and veggies. Many have food carts that will have you coming back every weekend. You can also stock up on bread and other baked goods by local bakers. Or find cute gifts like flowers or homemade soap—perfect for a friend’s birthday, or to treat yourself! – Allie

5.) Catch Up on Correspondence

No, work doesn’t end when school lets out, but take advantage of warm summer nights to reconnect with good friends whether that’s via a hand-written letter, a thoughtful email, or an evening of sipping wine on the porch. Slow down and make time for the conversations you put off during the rest of the year. On humid summer nights a talk with old friends is just as refreshing as a dip in the ocean—and often much less sandy! – Julia
