It’s that time of year again, fall. And you know what fall brings? New TV! Tis the season for 47 new shows to add to your DVR while you try and make it through the shows you have been watching for years. It’s so simple right? Just become a hermit and when you get home every night you don’t ever leave as you make your way through your DVR every night. OK, that is a little ridiculous and if you are anything like me you love to be a hermit, but it’s just as important to get out of the house now and again. It’s nice to smell fresh air, do fun things, see your friends, and remind yourself that the real world does still exists despite all evidence to the contrary. So here are some tips to get your through the era of peak TV.
Make Sacrifices
I know it’s hard, but sometimes a show you’ve invested years in isn’t paying off. Just because you’ve been watching for a while doesn’t mean you still have to. Eventually it’ll all be on Netflix anyway, and you can always come back to a show later.
Save Things
This year I started setting aside shows to binge watch later. Shows that have plots lines that move too slowly to watch week-to-week with little to no progress. It’s also a great idea for shows with mystery or thrilling plot lines. Keeps my heart rate down and l don’t freak out so often when cliffhangers arise because I already have the next episode!
Wait and See
This is a tricky situation. There are a ton of new shows premiering each year and it’s impossible to catch them all. Since the survival of new shows depends on how many people are watching you have to make some executive decisions. You can’t watch them all so pick the ones you are likely to love!
Dedicate a Non-TV Night
There’s a ton on TV on every night, and that is just standard cable. Dedicate a night where you aren’t rushing home to watch TV. Plan a night out (or plan multiple gym nights), go to dinner with friends, go shopping, or stay at home and read a book. I know the siren song of TV well, but there is more out there!
Don’t Spoil
You don’t know what your buddies had a chance to catch up on so make sure you start your TV rants with, “Are you caught up on…?” before you explain the plot line or latest twist.
