You’ve Got to Try the Tiny Food Craze

Playtime isn’t just for children anymore. Tiny foods have been taken to a whole new level. What else to make tiny foods than with a teeny kitchen? Doll-sized kitchens have been adjusted to be fully functional. The origins of the trend are relatively unknown. NPR suggests it resonates from Japan where miniatures follow kawaii, meaning all things cute.

Food ranges from a simply cooked tiny-sized hotdog to fried chicken complete with a KFC branded bucket. The worldwide phenomenon offers fake tiny food that you can pretend you are making. Kitchens also are functional on different scales. Some YouTubers have a fully functional kitchen, while others simply use small-sized equipment. Many stoves have heat produced by a tea light candle. But all kitchen have gadgets that are made for Barbie. Before the show, prep cooks work to size down the normal sized ingredients, like raw chicken or a pat of butter, for doll sized proportions. Quail eggs are often substituted for a chicken egg.

Production companies and foodies have hopped on this ridiculously cute trend worldwide. YouTube is overloaded with ample content to feast your eyes upon like Miniature Space and Lucky Miniature Food. Be prepared to be glued to be amazed by the world of micro cooking.

Tiny Wedding Cake

Screen Shot 2017-04-11 at 8.12.50 PMTastemade first grabbed my eye to the miniature-sized kitchen trend. Tastemade created a show, Tiny Kitchen, to feature small food complete with recipes for uber small stomachs. Every Tuesday, Tastemade highlights a Tiny Kitchen video on Snapchat. The company released a tiny wedding cake video a few weeks ago. The cake construction and decoration was performed with seemingless ease. I imagine the quirky music covers the mutterings of the cook’s difficulties when creating petite foods.

Sushi

Screen Shot 2017-04-11 at 8.16.12 PMThe show, Miniature Space, can be viewed on YouTube. This Japanese-based creator generates incredible stylized cuisine from around the world. A vintage-style dollhouse sets the backdrop for the videos. Sushi is incredibly difficult to make in the first place, let alone on a teeny scale. It’s wondrous how they created such fluffy rice and then were able to neatly roll and cut the salmon roll. Just one drop of soy sauce filled the doll-sized bowl.

Miniature Christmas Popcorn Balls

Screen Shot 2017-04-11 at 8.22.18 PM.pngLucky Miniature Food is a YouTube channel that is solely creates a itty-bitty foods. In fact, the doll house set was designed to be a fully functional kitchen. The amusing dialogue between the father and daughter team incorporates a really interactive show that others lack. The miniature popcorn balls are only four ingredients. Watching miniature popcorn pop on the stove was strangely captivating. It seems as if Barbie was about to pop around the corner to take it off the stove.

Happy Meal

Screen Shot 2017-04-11 at 8.31.34 PM.pngWendy Mini Citi’s micro-cooking videos can be found on Youtube. These videos are very intricate with the ingredients and are truly to dollhouse scale. Until you see the human fingers, it looks like a normal kitchen video. Her videos are rather short, which allows you to binge-watch her library of videos quickly. Where in the world did she find such small McDonald’s Happy Meal packaging?

Patisserie with Treats

Screen Shot 2017-04-11 at 8.34.45 PM.pngAnn, creator of How to Cook That, produced an 11-minute video that features how to make cupcakes, brownies, macarons, cakes and fruit tarts. She doesn’t make the goodies in the a tiny kitchen, but instead a full-sized kitchen. This video provides an easy way to actually cook miniature-sized because most cooks don’t own functioning doll-sized furniture. Ann also offers online printables, recipes and a tutorial for creating your own doll furniture.
