Tongkat Ali is an herbal medicine derived from a medium-sized slender tree of about 10 meters tall and is a popular folk name for Eurycoma longifolia. This plant is also known as “Longjack.” This herbal supplement comes from the roots of the green shrub tree, Eurycoma longifolia, which is native to Southeast Asia. The history of Tongkat Ali is quite long, and herbalists and practitioners of traditional medicines have long used this health-supporting herb for its hormone-balancing benefits.

Where Is It Found and How Do We Harvest It?

Derived from the Southeast Asian Eurycoma longifolia shrub, Tongkat Ali is an herbal medicine used in traditional medicine in Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, and other Asian countries. The reputation of this herb as a ‘true aphrodisiac’ has made it popular among the middle-aged and older populations, but it is also used to treat malaria, fevers, and infection.

Tongkat Ali is mostly found in the wild, but with its increasing popularity, harvesting the idea of it in plantations is also becoming inevitable. It is difficult to harvest and collect the herb in the wild and also stands the chance of endangering the plant. The Malaysian government has already taken some steps to preserve the wild specimens of this plant in order to preserve the natural environment. With the increasing economic support and efforts for creating plantations, Tongkat Ali is expected to thrive in Malaysia, which can set an example for other organizations working with traditional medicine.

Elements That Make Tongkat Ali Potent

Studies have found a few components in Tongkat Ali that can be linked with good health. Antioxidants like flavonoids, alkaloids, and other compounds are found in this plant, and such antioxidants have several health benefits. Free radicals can cause cellular damage, and antioxidants help fight this damage.

It is also popular in treating a variety of ailments including male infertility and infections because of the components present in it. It is especially directed towards a few health issues like hormone imbalance, commonly experienced by women. Some toxins have estrogen-like effects, and exposure to them can throw a woman’s hormone production off. A lot of medically undiagnosed symptoms like slow metabolism, fatigue, and brain fog are also treated with Tongkat Ali.

Tongkat Ali is usually taken orally in pill form. You can use it as a supplement, but there should be caution practiced (discussed later in the article). You can find it through a lot of vendors around the world like Tongkat Ali UK

Benefits of Tongkat Ali

Even though it is not widely recognized, it is becoming more popular and has been used traditionally for years to improve women’s health issues. Thankfully, more research is being conducted to shed some light on its benefits. A few of them are:

1. Prevent Weight Gain

This is one benefit that is especially popular among women. The metabolism rate in the body is dictated by hormones, and an imbalance almost always leads to unwanted weight gain. Tongkat Ali helps in stabilizing that. Gaining weight is accepted as a part of aging for most people, but this herb can help prevent that by balancing your hormones and boosting your metabolism.

2. Source of Energy

Tongkat Ali helps in producing ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which is the primary unit of energy. The energy production in the body is directly connected with our hormone levels, and if the body isn’t producing adequate hormones, you can experience fatigue. As discussed in the first benefit, Tongkat Ali is quite adept at balancing hormones and thus can help produce energy, which can lead to weight loss as the energy is more likely to be spent in exercising, leading to a boosted immune system as well.

3. Amplified Libido

Tongkat Ali is known as an aphrodisiac because of the higher level of testosterone found in it. Higher testosterone can lead to increased libido, no matter your gender. It can also make sexual pleasure more significant by increasing the sensitivity of a woman’s erogenous zones. Research has shown that, as testosterone is the male sex hormone directly responsible for sexual desire, it helps males have higher libido and sexual performance. That, in turn, can increase pleasure in sexual acts in sexual relationships

4. Stronger Bones

Osteoporosis, characterized by weak, fragile bones, is quite common with women. This debilitating disease can be caused by an imbalance/lack of testosterone. As Tongkat Ali helps with testosterone balancing, it inadvertently helps with bone structures.

5. Helps Improve Mood

Research and trials have shown that Tongkat Ali reduces stress, sleep loss, anger, confusion, and more. Cortisol is the main stress hormone in the body, and Tongkat Ali works to produce less of it. This also has an association with improved memory.

6. Controls Blood Sugar

Populations with high blood pressure need to have the right diet,  exercise, and quality sleep! This proper diet and cleanliness is the best defense against type II diabetes.

7. Helps Body Composition

Containing compounds called quassinoids, including eurycomaoside, eurycolactone, and eurycomanone, Tongkat Ali can boost athletic performance. This helps in building endurance, controlling fatigue, and using energy efficiently. This boost in energy can help with body composition.

Should you use Tongkat Ali?

As we’ve mentioned before, research on this plant is increasing, and although limited empirical evidence and years of experience both are the reality, we can draw some lines when it comes to usage. We have to bear in mind that the research is based on short-term results, and we don’t know the long term effect of regular intake.

Firstly, talk to your physician or medical prescriber. If they feel as though you’d benefit tremendously by it, add it to your routine as per their advice. If you have any serious health issues that might be threatened by adding it to your routine, follow your doctor’s advice.

Secondly, as it is not a very reputable solution out there, there isn’t a whole lot of quality control. Sometimes these supplements can have mercury in it. Try to purchase from a brand with enough credibility and a clear ingredient list.Lastly, due to the lack of research, it is highly risky for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
