How to Celebrate a Special Occasion During Quarantine

By Jasmine Anderson

As the coronavirus outbreak continues to spread through the world, chances are we are going to spend our favourite holidays and special occasions in the quarantine. Even though this doesn’t sound as exciting as spending it with the closest family and friends, we must learn how to adapt and live in the new normal.

Your and your loved ones’ safety is of utmost importance right now. So, large gatherings and celebrations must be postponed. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t have fun in the quarantine.  And who knows, maybe we’ll start a new family tradition this year!?

1. Celebrating the spooky season

Halloween is the favourite holiday for many kids and adults. It’s just a couple of days away, and some of us are still in quarantine! However, this doesn’t mean that Halloween is cancelled this year. You can have fun at home.

The first thing you need to do is to create spooky DIY Halloween decorations for your house and backyard. Organise a dress-up party for kids and take turns telling scary ghost stories with the flashlight. You can also make a Halloween movie marathon with scary or funny horror films. Besides that, making your treats and sweets is what will make this memorable. Don’t forget to carve the pumpkins. Make the virtual pumpkin carving contest with friends, and may the best pumpkin win!

2. Organise a dinner party

There is nothing better than spending the upcoming holidays with the family. Even though you can’t invite all the usual guests for your traditional Thanksgiving dinner, you make the most out of it with your households.

To host a safe dinner party, make sure that everyone is feeling well. Take precautions and host the party outdoors if possible. Due to the pandemic, it would be best if you could skip the buffet this year. Try cooking outdoors. It would be a great challenge and it would warm up the cold yard. You can also create outdoor entertainment for everyone, such as a scavenger hunt or dodgeball.

3. Virtual meals with closest ones

Not everyone feels comfortable making a dinner party in their back ard. Also, some of your closest friends and family might live far away, which makes this annual gathering almost impossible. Luckily, we live in the modern era where the internet rules the world and therefore video calls are possible.

Video call your friends and family. Try coordinating your menus so it feels like you’re together. You can also do matching decorations together. Online activities, such as charades can also be an option. To complete the atmosphere, create a gratitude jar. Write down on the piece of paper what you are thankful for and start a new Thanksgiving tradition.

4. Brighten your loved ones’ day

Most of us are used to giving special gifts and signs of attention during the holidays, especially Christmas. However, this year the coronavirus might be standing in your way, as you won’t be able to visit your friends and family, at least for now.

Even though you’re far apart, you’re separated by distance and not by heart! You can still show your loved ones that you care about them this upcoming holiday season. Who doesn’t like sending gifts and little signs of affection to their loved ones? Sometimes a simple Christmas card or a Christmas hamper is enough to brighten your loved ones’ day and let them know you are thinking of them.

5. Start a new tradition

As Christmas is just around the corner, you can’t help it but bring up family traditions. However, some of the traditions should be left in the years behind us due to safety reasons. Don’t let this get you down in the dumps. You can spend extra quality time with your household and start a new family tradition.

Instead of visiting your cousins and friends, you can give them a video call and organise a gift opening or decorating party together. This can be a great start to the new year ahead of us. Besides that, you can come up with new, unique family activities, such as playing board games and making hot cocoa with marshmallows. Traditions are fun, but new activities bring excitement and joy in the house.

Conclusion

Who knew that you could have so much fun in the quarantine!? Even though this type of entertainment is not what we’re used to, trying out something new and breaking out of the rut can be beneficial for the entire household. Don’t forget to check up on your loved ones during this holiday season. Make sure you spend some quality time with your friends and family whether it may be in real life or virtually.
