Essential Things You Need For Your First Apartment

Moving in in your first apartment is exhilarating. You’re starting life on your own as a grown-up, which can be scary, but thrilling. Besides picking the right apartment in a nice neighborhood, you need to think about all the essentials you’re going to need for your first apartment. But where to begin?

Think about each room individually. What are you going to use the most in your new apartment? According to that, create a list of essentials you should bring with you or purchase before the big move-in day.

1. Bathroom necessities

Most people usually get overwhelmed with the first apartment that they forget about one of the most important rooms in your new home– the bathroom. Whether you live alone, with a roommate or that special someone, the things you need to pack and buy remain the same. So, what are your main bathroom necessities?

  • Toilet paper: let’s face it, we can’t use the loo without the toilet paper.
  • Towels: don’t forget to bring enough towels for showering, face, hair and hands. 
  • Toiletries: toothbrush, toothpaste, cosmetics, soaps and shampoo are a must-have in your new home.
  • Bathroom floor rug: to keep the tiles dry and the bathroom pretty
  • Trashcan: female hygiene products, makeup wipes and other waste need their place in your lavatory.

2. Bedroom basics

Besides the bed, which is an obvious essential item in your bedroom, you’ll need to get a high-quality mattress for a good night’s sleep. Now imagine your ideal bedroom. What does it contain?

  • Bedsheets (at least two sets), blankets, pillows, covers for comfy sleeping
  • Bedside tables and lamps for storing your necessities at the reach of your fingertips
  • Wardrobe and clothes organisers to keep things neat and tidy
  • Curtains or drapes for some privacy and cosiness
  • A nice rug to keep your feet warm during the winter 

3. Kitchen essentials

Equipping a kitchen can be one of the most challenging tasks in your new apartment. If you have all the necessary electronic appliances, it’s time to pay attention to the things you use daily. Like what?

  • A set of at least 6 glasses– for water, juice and milk
  • Your favourite mugs for tea, coffee and hot cocoa
  • Plates of all kinds– for main dishes, soup, deserts
  • Cutlery– forks, knives and spoons
  • Cleaning supplies to keep your kitchen neat and organised 
  • Sharp knives for cutting meat, bread and veggies
  • Frying pans and pots
  • Bakeware
  • A cutting board
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Dish towels
  • A trash can

4. Living room basics

The living room is a favourite space in the house for many. That’s why people pay special attention to the style and details in their living rooms. This is the space where you’ll probably spend the most time, so you better make it good! What are the essentials you need to have in your new home?

  • A comfy sofa
  • A place to eat – it can be a traditional dining table, a coffee table if you like to eat while watching TV, or if you have a counter, get a few barstools
  • Don’t neglect the lighting, it’s one of the most important things in every apartment
  • A bookshelf for all your favourite classics, thrillers and fantasies
  • Plants to keep your living room fresh
  • TV and a TV stand

5. Homey feeling

The apartment that doesn’t feel like home is a complete waste of space. Aim for the warm and welcoming atmosphere in your new place. To create a homey feeling you’re yearning for, you need to personalise your flat as much as possible. What does that mean?

  • Hang your favourite artwork to display your personality
  • Add throw blankets and cushions where possible
  • If you’re lucky to have timber flooring make sure to accentuate it by adding an area rug here and there 
  • Use vases, flowerpots and decorative figurines to complete the atmosphere.
  • Curtains to add style and privacy 

Moving in in your new apartment requires a lot of patience and creativity.  Will you be able to create the space you’ve always dreamed off without forgetting all of the essentials? Therefore, it’s a good idea to make a list of necessities before you start packing. These are only some items you will need in your new flat. With time, you’ll be able to upgrade the space more and make it feel like a home.
