How a Pet Changes Your Life

Having a pet changes your life in ways you never thought possible. Whether it’s a cat or a dog, there are many benefits that come your way just by virtue of having one. From better physical and mental health to a friendly playmate for the children, here are some reasons to own a pet.

They Are Always there for Comfort

Your very own pet becomes a part of the family. They love being around the home as they make their mark on it. As such, they also make their mark on your heart and become someone to love. They are always there for you. In fact, they can be there a little too much. For example, making sure the home is clear of pets is just one check before installation of a new AC system. It’s not that workers hate cats and dogs, it’s just that they get in the way sometimes.

Improved Mental Health

When an animal imprints on you, they pretty much stick with you forever. And that means through thick and thin, you have someone there when you need them the most. Dogs and cats have been proven to provide comfort when we need it. They can help during times of stress and depression. And they have also been shown to decrease feelings of loneliness in older people and the recently bereaved. Physically, petting a pet increases the oxytocin levels in your body.

Much Better Physical Health

There are many documented mental health benefits from owning pets. But what of the physical. Well, as a responsible dog owner, you need to walk your dog and, of course, this means more exercise, more fresh air, and more sunlight. All of these are highly beneficial for your health. On average, dog owners spend around 300 minutes walking the dog, more than even the minimum amount of time recommended for walking or running, according to doctors and health experts.

Companions for the Kids

The great thing about cats and dogs is that they are excellent for kids. They can help with the development of smaller children and become a companion for life. Both have been known to even protect children when they are in danger, even warding off other animals such as foxes and even bears! But just like you, the children will also benefit from the excellent mental and physical health effects of owning, caring for and just being around an animal that loves you.

Meeting a Special Someone

Getting out with the dog is a great way to get the exercise you need. Going it alone is most people’s choice. But there are often other dog walkers around local parks and pathways. Or even groups you can join online. Why would you do this? Well, it’s great to get your dog used to other dogs for a start. But on a personal note, there are countless tales (or tails, sorry) of people meeting their special someone while out and about with their cute, cuddly, and furry friends.

Summary

Cats and dogs are always there for you when you need them. This is just one example of how a pet changes your life for the better. They also provide documented mental health benefits and encourage exercise. However, you may also meet someone special while walking the dog.
